To view data from a Belden Horizon Data Operations Instance, at least one child device (connected device within the Belden Horizon Data Operations instance) must be first properly set up. The child device must be connected with tags, and then the tags must be transformed as imported topics inside the Belden Horizon Data Operations instance's *Default Generic MQTT SSL connector*.

This first child connection will facilitate the data connection between a Belden Horizon Data Operations instance and the Belden Horizon Data Manager. Additional child device connections from a Belden Horizon Data Operations instance will append to the Belden Horizon Data Operations instance's data and also display as additional child devices in Belden Horizon Data Manager.

:::hint{type="info"}
**Notes**:

- Viewing a child device's messages works only for standard tags.
- If the child device's tag is removed from the Default Generic MQTT SSL connector, the child device is not deleted from the list of available child devices and will still be displayed.
:::

# Before You Begin

Using Belden Horizon Data Manager, activate an edge device. See [Activate an Edge Device](docId\:bbgh94p0zHJUZ0JuaO6bY) for more details.

To use view data from an edge device and/or a child device, you will need to do the following.

- Step 1: Connect a Device with Tags in Belden Horizon Data Operations
- Step 2: Set up Default Generic MQTT SSL Connector with Imported Topics in Belden Horizon Data Operations
- Step 3: View Data in Belden Horizon Data Manager

To jump to a specific section, refer to the Table of Contents on the right side and click the corresponding step.

# Step 1: Connect a Device with Tags in Belden Horizon Data Operations

Before data can be viewed for a Belden Horizon Data Operations Instance, a device must be first connected to the instance, and then associated with tags. This allows the connected device's data to be extracted from the Belden Horizon Data Operations instance.

**To connect a device with at least one tag**:

1. [Connect a Device](docId\:FzHgH9_zgcK06u648n-cR)

2. [Add Tags](docId:4Y_4F9l-R7iRmK69LmEoZ) to the connected device from the previous step.

# Step 2: Set up Default Generic MQTT SSL Connector with Imported Topics in Belden Horizon Data Operations

After a device is connected with tags, the Default Generic MQTT SSL connector must be enabled. Then the generated tags earlier must then be transformed as topics to be immediately imported and enabled into the Default Generic MQTT SSL connector.

**To set up Default Generic MQTT SSL connector with at least one imported topic**:

1. Make sure that the Default Generic MQTT SSL connector is connected. See *Manage Individual Connectors* within [Manage Connectors](docId:0m9N5efEXrAAMimfwYAu3) for details.

   ::Image[]{src="https://api.archbee.com/api/optimize/SSUUxKZUk9bFTEPNn_6Zo/UCodhfelKAzdvf0DJUp41_belden-default-ssl.png" size="80" width="1920" height="866" caption="Connected Default Generic MQTT SSL connector" position="center" showCaption="true"}
2. Import the added tags from **Step 1: Connect a Device with Tags in Belden Horizon Data Operations** as outbound topics to the Default Generic MQTT SSL connector. See *Connector Topics* within [Manage Connectors](docId:0m9N5efEXrAAMimfwYAu3) for details.
3. Enable the imported topics. See the *Manage Connector Topics* section in [Manage Connectors](docId:0m9N5efEXrAAMimfwYAu3) for details.

4. (Optional) Edit the imported topics to assign user-friendly names.

# Step 3: View Data in Belden Horizon Data Manager

Once a Belden Horizon Data Operations instance is connected to Belden Horizon Data Manager and a device is added to that Belden Horizon Data Operations instance, you can view data (outbound messages) from that Belden Horizon Data Operations instance or that instance's (child device) in the Belden Horizon Data Manager UI.

**To access the data viewing UI in Belden Horizon Data Manager**:

1. Log in to Belden Horizon Data Manager.
2. Select a company. The *Projects* pane appears.
3. Do one of the following:
   - Click a project from the *Projects *pane. The* Dashboard* pane appears for the project.

   - Click the **Actions** icon for a project, and then select **View**. The* Dashboard* pane appears for the project.
4. From the navigation panel, select **Edge Devices**. The *Edge Devices* pane appears.

## View Data From Edge Device

**To view edge device data**:

1. From *Edge Devices*, click the **ID** of the edge device whose data you want to view.
   The *Device Details* pane appears.
2. Click the **Raw** tab. The *Raw Data* pane appears.
3. Toggle **Auto-Refresh** at the bottom of the pane.
4. Select the refresh interval from the **Interval **drop-down list. The messages published by the topics you have added to the Generic MQTT-SSL connector in *Step 2: Set Up Default Generic MQTT SSL Connector with Imported Topics in Belden Horizon Data Operations* appear on the pane. The list of messages is refreshed according to the interval you have selected from the earlier step.

## View Data From Child Edge Device

**To view child edge device data**:

1. Click the **Show child devices** icon next to an edge device. The child devices for the edge device drop down.
2. Click the **ID** of the child device whose data you want to view. The selected device's information pane appears.
3. Click the **Explore** tab. The *Explore *pane appears.
4. Toggle **Auto-Refresh** at the bottom of the pane.
5. Select the refresh interval from the **Interval** drop-down list. The topics you have added to the Default Generic MQTT SSL connector in *Step 2: Set Up Default Generic MQTT SSL Connector with Imported Topics in Belden Horizon Data Operations* appear on the pane. Their **Last Value **and **Updated At** fields refresh according to the interval you have selected in the previous step.
6. To see the list of values a topic has published since it began auto-refreshing, click **Last Value** for that topic. The values appear in the* Edge Device Object value* dialog box, in a tabular format.
7. To display the same data as a chart, select the **Chart** tab.

**Note**: Once a child device's data has been published (and has become viewable) in Belden Horizon Data Manager, you can visualize this data using Grafana. See [Visualize Child Device Data Using Grafana](docId\:OZlZFqDM9F-w1gdoIRDws).
